Are Parasites making you sick?

What are Parasites?

Parasites are organisms that live in and feed off a living host. Parasites thrives more easily in children and up to 80% of Australian children are infected annually.

Worms can be the most common cause of intestinal microbial imbalance in humans. Parasites can steal the nutrients in your food, leaving you hungry and tried after every meal, they can also feed off your red blood cells, causing anemia.

Trouble sleeping, mood changes, skin irritations, headaches or migraines and muscle pain can all be caused by the toxins that the parasites release into the blood stream. Female worms can release endotoxins that alter our neurotransmitters to manipulate our thought patterns which allows them to live more easily in our bodies, this affects the brain leptin cycle in humans inducing the urge to eat more sugary foods as that’s their preferred food source. The female parasite detects the health of the host (us) and lays their eggs when the immune system is weakened, the body has heavy metal toxicity, highly stressed and or has gut issues and imbalances which makes them is nutrient deficient. Children are particularly susceptible to parasites because they play in environments with contaminated areas and at overpopulated school grounds.

There are several types of worms: flatworms, thorny-headed worms and roundworms. The most common is threadworms also known as pinworms or seatworms. Threadworms get their name from their appearance because adult worms resemble fine pieces of white cotton. Most people will experience an increase in population at least a few times in their lives, usually when their immune system is weak. People who have compromised immune systems need to treat themselves regularly to be symptom free and for better health.

How do we catch worms?

  • Direct contact with an infected person.

  • Direct contact with a contaminated object or surfaces.

  • Breathing in eggs floating around shopping malls as thread worm can survive in external environments for two to three weeks.

  • Poor hygiene and crowed environments are the major contributors to the spread of threadworms.

Humans become infected when they swallow the eggs. The shell of the eggs is dissolved by stomach enzymes and the worms move to the lower small intestine to mature and mate. The growth cycle from hatching to maturity can be up to 10 days to a month depending on the species. Adult worms live for about two months and the male thread worm dies after copulation.

Common sign and symptoms:

  • Restless legs and arms.

  • Restless sleep, grinding of teeth during sleep.

  • Emotional irritability.

  • Craving sugar.

  • Nervous twitches in jaw and eyes.

  • Slight stomach pains in stomach and variation in stool consistency.

  • Experiencing Urinary tract infections.

  • Skin blemishes.

  • Itchy anus – especially at night time.

How do we treat them?

  • Combantrin -1 or Vermox which contains Mebendaxole which can be purchased from the chemist. These worming treatments only work on the adult worms that are present in the intestine at the time of the medicine passing through. The dosage of the medicine only kills 95 percent of the threadworm and roundworm population, they do not kill the eggs so, you have to repeat the medicines 10 days to two weeks after the first dose in order to kill the newly hatched eggs.

  • Make sure the whole family is treated.

  • Have a shower before going to bed.

  • Make sure that everyone uses their own towels and face washes.

  • Vacuum carpets and mop floors.

  • Wash all bedding.

  • Keep nails short and kept.

  • Keep toilet and bathrooms really clean as eggs can sit on toilet seats and door handles.

  • Avoid food and drinks that contain sugar because treatments containing mebendazole are trying to starve the worms of glucose.

  • Drink apple cider vinegar with your meals
